About Me

I'm married and have 2 gorgeous children. A 3 year old and a 1 year old. I L-O-V-E reading, bit of a book worm. I love to go camping, hiking, repelling. I'm pretty "sporty" and enjoy soccer and softball, though I've been known to hit a couple strikes while bowling. I would like to be as fabulous a seamstress as my mother so I am working on learning the in's and out's of my sewing machine.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints because it's the true church. I started taking the missionary discussions so that I could better understand and explain why I didn't believe in the doctrines of this church...it back fired on me. I was baptized instead. The gospel makes sense, it brings peace/joy/understanding to my life, it answers my questions, it is perfect.

How I live my faith

I attend my church meetings to include Sacrament, Sunday School & the class for Young Women. I am currently serving as the Young Women Secretary, which means that I am involved with the youth program of the Church and am privileged to work closely with the young ladies of my ward. I also serve as a visiting teacher which means that I visit several different women from my ward on a monthly basis and make sure that they are doing ok whether that's spiritually, physically, emotionally, you name it and help them in any way that I can, even if that just means chatting. I read the scriptures and pray daily. I try to be an example of the values I esteem and to not only "talk the talk" but "walk the walk".

Why do some call Mormonism a cult?

Some call Mormonism a cult because it is not a "traditional" Christian church. The primary complaint of the "traditionalists" (generally Protestant Churches) is that we do not believe in the doctrine of the trinity as it relates to the nature of the Godhead. The doctrine of the trinity was codified in the Nicene Creed in 325 AD, many years after the death of Christ and the Apostles. It basically says that the Godhead, The Father, Son and Holy Ghost, are one being in "substance." Since Mormonism does not accept this doctrine, they say we believe in a different Christ than they do and therefore are a cult. It is curious that this "trinitarian" doctrine is not taught anywhere in the Bible.

Mormons believe the Bible is the Word of God. The Bible (and the early church established by Jesus and His Apostles) teaches that the Godhead indeed consists of The Father, Son and Holy Ghost. But, it teaches that they are: 1) three distinct individuals as expressed in Acts 7:54-60 where Stephen is being stoned. "He being filled with the Holy Ghost looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw Jesus standing on the right hand of God." And it teaches 2) they are one in purpose, not in substance (John 17 where Jesus offers his intercessory prayer, particularly verses 20-23.) This is what Mormons believe.

It is noteworthy that the early Christians were called the "sect of the Nazarenes" (Acts 24:5) and were considered a cult by the Sadducees and Pharisees, the predominant religions of the day.

Because we believe in continuing revelation through Prophets as in the days of old, i.e. Moses, Abraham, this is uncomfortable for some people because media has made our Prophets seem like evil men leading people astray, when they are just trying to teach us correct principles so that one day we all may return to live with our Father in Heaven.

Another reason is because we believe in the sacred nature of temples, meaning only worthy members may enter the Temple so people think that evil rituals are performed. However, in reality the nature of the temple is uplifting and beautiful and gives us clarity to what the purpose of life is, the plan of salvation, and other topics such as life, death, and the atonement of Christ. The temple is not "secret, but it is sacred. However, we encourage all to live so that they may one day enter the temple.

Why was a Restoration of the Gospel needed? Haven’t we always had the Bible?

When Jesus was on the earth he established his church. To guide it, 12 apostles were called by God and had priesthood authority to act in his name. When an apostle died, he was to be replaced so that there would always be 12 “special witnesses” of Christ (this is shown by the calling of Mathias as a member of the 12 in Acts:1)
The early years were troublesome times for Christians. The greatest antagonist to the church was the Roman Empire. During this era of persecution, apostles were killed and priesthood authority was lost. Centuries after Christ was crucified Rome pulled a 180 and adopted its own form of “Christianity” as the mandated state religion. To conform to previously held pagan traditions, ordinances like baptism were changed and creeds of faith, not found in the bible, were established.
Recognizing the discrepancies between this church and New Testament Christianity, righteous people protested and many of their followers formed new churches. This era of protestant reformation was critical in advancing religious liberty. But simply recognizing the errors of a church, does not give one God's priesthood authority (see Hebrews 5:4) Even those with the best intentions of following Christ’s teachings need proper priesthood authority to be baptized. The world needed a Restoration of Christ’s original church, not a reformation of an apostate version of it. And as soon as a nation was established with the religious freedom to allow it, the Lord did restore his church!
