Heather: Mormon.

Hi, I'm Heather

I grew up as an "Army Brat", and served in the United States Air Force before getting married and becoming a mom. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My dad retired from the Army when I was in 8th grade, so the military has always been a part of my life, but it was still a surprise when I joined the Air Force after high school. I chose to leave the United States Air Force Academy after successfully completing my freshman year in order to get married.

I married a wonderful man, and our family has remained my priority over the years. I have been blessed to be a stay-at-home mom to our 5 boys and our precious baby girl. I'm proud to be a soccer mom (or sometimes even the coach). If it is not my turn to teach Preschool in our co-op, I like to volunteer at my sons' school, and you will often find me at Story Time at our local library.

Why I am a Mormon

There are so many religions out there, and I used to think that as long as they lead people to be better, it doesn't really matter which one a person follows. But it does. There's a difference between GOOD ways, and GOD'S ways. God has a plan for each of us, and is anxious for us to learn of Him. He sent His Son, to be an example for us, and to make it possible for us to return to live with Him again someday through the power of the atonement.

As my children have gotten older, I've had the opportunity to see how important it is for them to grow up knowing that they are children of a loving Heavenly Father, who is intimately aware of them, and loves them each individually. They need to know who they are, so that they can be firm in standing for what is right amidst so much that is wrong all around them. From the time that they are little, they have been taught to believe the words of a children's song called, "I am a Child of God." I wouldn't want them to be raised any other way.

Sometimes people ask, "What is different about the Mormon Church?" Yet, when you think of it, it seems that the answer is a discovery of what is the same between the teachings of the Mormon Church and the teachings found in the Bible. I believe that God is unchanging, that he speaks to his people through a prophet today - just as in ancient times. I believe that he authorizes those who are chosen and worthily called to act in the sacred name of His son, Jesus Christ - just as the apostles Peter, James, and John. I believe that God directs us individually through the Holy Spirit, and that we all have the opportunity to draw closer to Him as we read the scriptures, pray, and follow the example of our Savior. Does that really sound so different?

How I live my faith

Every day our family has morning prayer together and then we read our scriptures as a family before we eat breakfast and head off to school or work. We eat dinner together as a family, and our bedtime routine also includes family prayer in addition to personal prayers before going to bed. We gather together once or twice weekly for a family night, instead of scheduling ourselves and our time away from each other. We have pictures of our family and of Christ hanging throughout our house, so that we never forget what is most important.
