Hi, I'm Amy
I grew up near the DC beltway, and now live in the WA wheat fields. I'm a wife and mother. I'm a teacher. I'm a Mormon.
About Me
I'm the oldest girl from a large and loving family. My dad worked for the CIA, and we moved all over the US growing up. This was a challenging but wonderful experience, and helped me be the person I am today. I taught elementary school until I had my first child, and now I get to stay home and teach my own kids - in my pajamas! I'm a wife and a mother of 3. I love my family! I like to try new recipes or curl up with a good book. I enjoy blogging and I'm learning photography. Home is my favorite place to be.
Why I am a Mormon
I grew up in the Church with a great legacy of Mormon pioneer ancestors, but I learned that each person must blaze their own trail of testimony for themselves. No one else could do it for me. I sought after that testimony, to know if this church was true, through prayer and by studying the scriptures (especially the Book of Mormon). My answer came so powerfully and certainly, I could never deny it. Christ lives and loves me. He is MY Redeemer. I continue to work at building and strengthening that testimony each day!
This life isn't easy. It's full of challenges, heartaches and disappointments, but the knowledge I have of the truths of the gospel bring such joy and peace and purpose into my life. Each day is a gift from our Father in Heaven. I am a child of God, and have a purpose here on the earth. I feel honored to be a woman, to be a wife, and to be a mother.
Personal Stories
In what ways have your prayers been answered?
About six months ago, I became critically ill and was hospitalized with pneumonia. I had never been away from my three young children for more than two days! I was frightened and worried that I may never return home again."We're out of milk! We have overdue library books! Who will pick the kids up from school? Moms can't get sick!"
I believe in the power of prayer. I know God hears and answers our prayers. As I was being rushed to the hospital in the ambulance, I prayed and asked Heavenly Father to please take care of my family. An immediate peace came into my heart and my mind. Christ's words put to music in a familiar hymn "How Firm a Foundation" entered my mind and calmed my "troubled heart" - "Fear not, I am with thee; oh, be not dismayed, for I am thy God and will still give thee aid. I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand..."
As news of my critical condition spread to my family members, they joined with our church congregation (ward) and began fasting and praying for my recovery. I could physically FEEL their prayers, and God's healing power strengthening me. There was power in those combined prayers in my behalf, and I am so thankful for their faith. I know the wonderful doctors who treated me were guided and inspired by those prayers of faith to know what to do, and how best to help me.
The experiences which refine are not easy, but are there for us to learn and be tested. I realized my most important work is to be a wife and mother. I am so thankful that my health has returned, and that I am able to be with my family now and forever. I am never alone. Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ know me and love me, and are aware of my needs. Through this experience, I gained a greater appreciation for my life, for my family, and for the gospel.
How I live my faith
I love how our Church encourages us to follow Christ by serving others. Every single member is given the opportunity to help someone else.
I love serving my family. It's not always the easiest or most glamorous work, but it is an important one. I'm grateful I get to stay home with my children. My husband and I work hard to be their most positive influences.
I also have the privilege to teach the 12 and 13-yr-old girls in our congregation on Sundays, as well as helping provide opportunities for them to learn and serve (and have fun) during the week. They are such good and strong girls, and such great examples to me!
I also love visiting with the women in our church and hearing about their challenges and triumphs. When we share our testimonies with one another, we always come away with a deeper love for each other and for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
