I'm a recent convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

About Me

I am a mother to my son, Colin Parker and my two step children, Tanner and Shelby. I am a Veterinary Nurse and Veterinary Hospital Manager. I enjoy cooking, gardening, reading, watching movies and spending time with my family.

Why I am a Mormon

During some family struggles, I decided to investigate LDS. My husband was brought up in the faith, but had fallen away during his adolescent years. We both agreed that we needed to expand our faith to strengthen our family. After meeting with the Elders and attending church for a couple of months, I wanted to make my decision official. It was the best decision I could have made for myself and my family. The church has enhanced my life in some many ways.

How I live my faith

It is very important to us to pray and read our scriptures regularly. That helps to keep us focused on being grateful for our blessings and sharing our testimonies with others. We try to maintain our commitment to service and helping others, beyond just our callings. It is amazing how the Holy Spirit can prompt you to help others and how great that makes you feel.

What is the Mormon lifestyle like? How do Mormons live?

Family is everything to us. Our family spends lots of our free time together because we like each other. Life gets crazy with teenagers, dance practice, after school academic decathlon, usually with a toddler in tow, but no matter what, every Monday night is Family Night.

The kids know that every Monday we spend time together and nothing gets in the way of it. It's our commitment to each other. We bake cookies, have lessons about the Savior, work on personal goals, go to the park, go geocaching, play board games or just go out for ice cream.

We do lots of things together. The point is that at least once a week we spend an hour or two together, just for the sake of being together, just because we love being together as a family. It's not as perfect as it may sound, with all the poking and "she's in my spot," and all the other crazy things family members do to each other when scrambling for a spot in the living room, but we try real hard. It takes effort to make sure we don't miss, but it's worth it.

I'm not sure the kids will remember all the games we played, the places we went or what we did, but I hope they always remember that we loved each other enough to dedicate one night a week to be with each other. And that we spent every Monday night together for as many Mondays as they can remember because family is everything to us, and every member of our family is important.

Why do some call Mormonism a cult?

I just saw news footage where a minister called the Mormon Church a ‘cult’ and the news commentator turned around and said it wasn’t. The news commentator was right. One definition listed for ‘cult’ in Webster’s Dictionary is “a religion regarded as unorthodox.” ‘Unorthodox’ according to whom? Catholicism and over 2000 churches who broke off of the Catholic Church or the original teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ? We believe some of the original doctrines contained in the original Church of Jesus Christ fell into apostasy and were changed by men. One example is the definition of the Godhead as laid out in the Nicene and Athanasian Creeds that are widely accepted by most Catholic and Protestant churches today. We believe the Godhead is made up of three separate and distinct individuals that are one in purpose not in body. When I read about the atonement in Matthew 26:39 (KJV), “And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt” I believe God the Father, Jesus Christ, Peter and the other Apostles would find the teaching that ‘Jesus Christ was praying to himself’ as quite ‘unorthodox’. I choose to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, not the teachings of men…regardless of the names they choose to call us.
