Hi, I'm Karen
I'm a Mormon.
About Me
My husband and I have nine children. Our youngest son is on a mission. I am grateful to my missionaries who forty years ago were willing to go on a mission and teach me as a young college student. They were the most important lessons of my life. The knowledge that families can be together forever has been especially close to my heart as we have suffered much loss in our lives. Now my son has the same opportunity as my missionaries - to help others find the Gospel and feel the Holy Spirit testify of Spiritual truths. I am proud of him for his dedication to the Gospel and his enthusiasm to share it with others.
Why I am a Mormon
I always felt a relationship with my Heavenly Father but although I searched I could not find answers to questions like where did I come from, what is after daeth, and what is the purpose of my life. When I went to college it was a time of self discovery. I was blessed during this time to meet two young men who had accepted the call to go on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although I was proud and stubborn, the Spirit had patience with me. Through prayer, fasting and reading the Book of Mormon I was able to feel the Spirit testify of the truthfulness of the Gospel and change my life forever. My questions had been answered and my relationship with my Heavenly Father was even more meanigful when I understood I was a Child of God and that he loved me in a personal way and wanted to guide me through my life so that I could go back with my family to live with him someday.
I love the Gospel with all my heart, mind and strength.
Personal Stories
Could you talk about your baptism?
It's been forty years since I joined the Church but that was not the first I had heard about the Church. Each time I had an encounter with the Church it prepared me a little more to gain a testimony. When I was just six years old my grandmother died and as we came back for the funeral a lady on the plane bore her testimony and shared a Book of Mormon with us. Even at that tender age I felt a sense of peace as she spoke. Little did I know at the time but my father had had two Mormons as part of his crew as he flew missions in WWII. They also shared their testimony and a Book of Mormon. I read those inside covers later and their testimonies were powerful. When I was about twelve we went to the NY City World’s Fair and entered the Mormon Pavilion, a small replica of the Salt Lake Temple. Inside we saw a diorama of Joseph Smith’s First Vision and Man’s Search for Happiness. This was the single most indelible impression I carried away from the Fair. Then I saw a movie about the Mormons coming West and the miracle of the seagulls and the crickets and was imprerssed. I admired the Mormons inmy school. When I studied with the missionaries I got very sick and that humbled me enough for the Spirit to touch me. When I was reading Alma 32 I finally gave place to the word and it began to grow in me. When I was baptized literally all of these connections with the Gospel came to me clearly and each time the Lord had preserved me from physical harm or temptation. I knew then that the Lord is mindful of us individually and I have been grateful for that throughout my life especially when we have faced trials. He does not always protect us from adversity but he never abandons us in the face of adversity. He is there to share our burdens and bring us peace. I testify that the Church is true, that Joseph Smith was an instrument in the hands of the Lord to restore the Gospel. I testify of the truthfulness of that Gospel and the strength and peace it can give you.
How I live my faith
Recently we have had the privilege of having our youngest son go on a mission. He is constantly in our prayers and thoughts. But we are proud to help him accomplish this. Having a missionary in the field helps my family at home live the Gospel more fully. His letters home bring us closer together and closer to our Heavenly Father. We have the opportunity to share our testimonies with each other and with him and we strengthen each other. I love to hear of the families he is working with, the service he is doing, and the scriptural insights he has. My husband is an Institute teacher and discussing the Gospel brings us great pleasure. The Church is not just a Sunday church but you embrace the Gospel every day of your life. And the Gospel embraces you. You feel the comfort, knowledge and love that the Holy Ghost gives you. I am proud to have a son who will effect people's lives in such a profound way.
