Hi, I'm Corinne
Former college athlete and river guide, now a full-time mom of five and loving it. I'm a Mormon.
About Me
I love adventure-- from whitewater kayaking and canoeing to exploring new places through travel. My husband and I lived in the UK for two years and it was amazing! It helped us learn to love and appreciate other parts of the world and their people and cultures. I also love playing the piano, drawing, reading the classics, and writing poetry. I ran the 100 meter hurdles in college for Brigham Young University and played soccer for Salt Lake Community College before serving a mission for my church. Serving a mission was life changing-- I met many people from all walks of life and learned to love them so much. It changed my perspective from being focused on myself to wanting to make the world a better place. It also reinforced the idea that I wanted to be a full-time mom some day. Now I stay home with my five children-- having them has been the best adventure of my life so far.
Why I am a Mormon
I was raised by devout Mormon parents, but it wasn't until I was a teenager that I began to believe for myself. At a difficult time in my teenage years I started to read the Book of Mormon every day. Immediately a peace came into my life that wasn't there before and I often felt God spoke specifically to me and my challenges through the scriptures. I also learned to lean on Him through prayer; He helped me through some difficult times in those early years, between teenage friend troubles, to choices about where to attend college, to dating challenges, to facing day-to-day problems.
Running track for BYU was often challenging because it required a lot of physical and mental energy. Every day before practice I would go into the bathroom to pray and ask for help. He helped me so much each day. During other challenging periods I have drawn upon Heavenly Father's help to do something I wasn't sure I could do alone. He became my best friend.
At one point I had a decision to make-- I was determined that I wouldn't just be a Mormon because that is what my parents did or simply to please them or fit cultural norms. As I looked at other faiths and examined my own beliefs, I took the challenge "whosoever shall do his will, he will know the doctrine," from the Bible as well as Moroni's challenge in the Book of Mormon. I learned that faith is something one has to exercise in order to believe, and that often spiritual knowledge comes a little at a time, rather than in a giant vision or revelation.
I love learning from modern prophets whose messages reflect God's counsel for surmounting today's challenges. I eventually served a mission for the church which ultimately solidified my beliefs and faith in Christ. I saw first hand the power of Jesus Christ to transform lives and bring happiness. I found my best and most rewarding experiences as I learned to serve Him. Being a member of this church has brought me so much happiness.
How I live my faith
I believe the simple recipe Christ taught in the Bible to love others and love God. After my mission, this became my personal mission-- to do as much as possible to help others. This is what makes my life worth living! Foremost, I love being a mom. I love watching my children grow proportionally to the amount of love and time I give them. I especially love to help educate them-- from nature walks to reading to museum visits--this is very rewarding for me. I love to see their faces light up when I praise them or help them learn a new skill. I also love doing activities with them to help them develop empathy-- we take meals to needy families together, visit the homeless shelter, donate to the needy, and deliver cookies to new families in our area. I hope they will grow up to be kind, hard-working, educated, and compassionate.
I love working with children, not just my own. I regularly volunteer at the school to help with reading, and I volunteer for our local cub scouting organization, where I am the den mother to some great 8 year-old boys. I've also served as a pianist for the children of our church, as well as an organist.
After living in Dallas and seeing some of the poverty there, welfare is another issue close to my heart. I worked as the head of a women's relief organization providing for the spiritual and physical needs of women and their families in a suburb of Denver. While it hurts to see people suffering, it feels so good to help them get a "hand up."
I've had friends within this faith and without that have taught me so much about being there for each other and being happy for another's success. I try to be a friend like they are and teach my children the same.
